FLINT COLLECTIVE
Flint Collective
On July 24th, 2021, the Flint Collective NYC presented a guerrilla performance in the streets of the East Village. For one night, the Collective transformed a disregarded sidewalk and otherwise garbage-ridden curb space between two outdoor dining huts, into an impromptu venue for a theatrical event. Light was the medium that set the stage, and captured the attention of the pedestrians who were invited to stop by. The shutter's frame of a bakery, kindly given to the Flint Collective for their use, was interlaced with strips of reflective paper and other materials that enhanced the quality of light. Only two sources of light were introduced into the space. Working with borrowed light from the storefront, as well as the existing geometry and materiality of the site, the Collective transformed the experience of this slice of the neighborhood. On the stage, a classical guitarist - Marta Casarin - performed a repertoire of guitar pieces from Italian romanticism, the Spanish flamenco and the 20th-century Brazilian music, along with some of her own original songs. Dancing to her notes was regular Flint collaborator; New York contemporary choreographer and dancer - Buttons - who improvised her flow taking the music where the sound couldn't reach. The project's purpose was to bring the community together to share an experience that brings fresh perspective of their surroundings through different forms of expression, all of which was brought together by the power of light.
