Ahram is a perceptual lighting sculpture, that is part of a body of work that questions the
human perception. In particular, the work questions the relationship between perception, and perspective.

The sculpture represents a physical manifestation of this duality, exposing our construct and perception of reality, as it rests on our vantage point as the pivot point.

The work encourages viewers to examine their beliefs and open their horizon to discover alternate realities.

In my spare time I design and create costumes. I have designed Halloween costumes with my son for the past 8 years. And for last three years I have created dance costumes for his friend’s dance competitions.

The costumes are captured in the videos. The three costume shown in these videos are the favorites to date.

UPSTATE NY

PHOTO SERIES

BEBE REGNIER

LAMPWORKS, INC.

Due to the pandemic, we are residing in what was once just a weekend house but is now our full-time home in Upstate NY.  Since we aren't going to the gym, I take my iPhone with our standard poodle, Max, and exercise by walking along quiet country roads.  Sometimes, I drive to nearby areas to walk a "foreign road" within a few miles of our home.

My process is simple.  Along with lighting (of course), it is important that each photo has good proportion and composition, utilizing positive and negative space.  Many of the subjects may be considered ordinary, (and indeed I've driven past them all for 30 years without a second thought), however, I enjoy showing how common objects can be viewed and appreciated from a new perspective.

I've been taking photos for over 160 days as a "Diary of the Pandemic".  It was difficult to choose just a handful; there are many more on Instagram.

I used to sketch a lot – anything and anyone.  That was long ago when I was studying design in art school.

For decades I have been contemplating drawing again, an old passion that had fallen to the wayside for lack of time. I think that I secretly wondered if I would still know how to draw.

The quarantine pushed me to evaluate the state of our art supplies (relics from my daughter’s high school days) and I settled on dry pastel. I looked around the house for possible subjects and I started with winter fruit. Then came Spring and beautiful flowers.

I like to work from live subjects rather than photos. Drawing or painting from a photo relies on the camera to do the work your eyes are supposed to do. I enjoy the process, the experience of re-learning how to look and how to see.  Isn’t it what we lighting people do all day long? We visualize light and shadow.

Much of my art is made from discarded and natural materials and transformed into lighting. Although this work occupies a good deal of my extra curricular activities, it is just too related to my daily work in the lighting field to be considered real "moonlighting." Instead, I am submitting some small bouquets of found objects - a distant relative of the 'nosegay.' Although nosegays have been around since medieval times, and typically delight the nose with a fragrance, I take poetic license and create small bouquets out of most any object. I make them simply for my own delight - olfactory or otherwise. Finding and arranging beautiful objects is one of the most consistent ways I can make sense of the world and feel a sense of calm.

I used to live in a studio apartment on the 20th floor with large windows facing East. Every morning I was lucky to experience wonderful sunrises without the obstruction of city structure. Waking up every day before sunrise became my routine because I did not want to miss any day of such a wonderful event. Even though my routine was the same, such as waking up before sunrise, having my tea, and watching the sun rising in front of my eyes, the view I experienced every day was different. I was fascinated not only by the views I was seeing over the horizon but how the rays of the sun changed the mood, atmosphere, and colors of my small studio room. Almost everything was consistent in my room such as walls, objects, the arrangement of furniture except the light and my emotions. Sun showed up in my room every day, but always in different and unique ways.

Routine is a film and installation about the ever-changing quality of light that never fails to surprise and fascinate us. The film captures only 11 minutes of morning sunlight. It is recorded in real-time and no time-lapse effect or any other editing techniques is applied.

This piece is a chalk pastel portrait of an Imperial guardian lion on basswood. Since the Ming dynasty, the entrances to many examples of traditional Chinese architecture have been protected by Imperial guardian lion statues. These statues typically come in pairs- one male, and one female. Typically, the male lion is depicted with a ball under his paw, and the female is depicted with a cub.

I first saw these lion statues on a childhood trips to visit family in China. During these trips, I saw recurring themes of animals, plants & landscape in Chinese art and architecture that have since served as inspiration in my own work. I chose to depict the lioness in this particular piece as a nod to all of the strong women I am lucky to have in my life as my support structure, mentors, and role models.

Jane L Wechsler

I came to America, as a refugee, not speaking English. A small child, I remember feeling an outsider. Growing up, those moments instilled a sensitivity to others - an awareness and knowledge that not everyone fits into the same group, some are excluded, or even persecuted – in the larger society, or within smaller, more intimate groups.

In early June of this year – after the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd; I began a series of watercolor portraits of the men, women and children who have died at the hands of law enforcement or “blind justice.” Using a small, handmade sketch book that I’d been saving – (a gift from the architect/urban planner who designed Battery Park City, Brian Shea) I thought this is where I will paint these portraits.

Out of the hundreds who have died, I painted 63.

As I completed the pages of that first book, Congressman John Lewis and CT Vivian (who had worked with Martin Luther King) died on the same day. I did portraits of them and began painting the first group again – in a different book - titling the group “heroes and martyrs”.

I reread the news articles, and with each portrait, included their age, where they died, when they died (and if I could locate it) when they were born. Each one is heartbreaking.

I post the portraits on Instagram @bodhictta and tag the individual. Some have thousands of mentions, some very few, or they share a name with someone else. On Father’s Day – the family of Bernard Moore tagged the portrait I’d done of their father. That was one of the moments I was most grateful for.

These small paintings are a way of honoring these individuals.

In these perilous and unprecedented times – stay safe and vote in November.

Thank you.

A friend, Noele De Leon, took a photo of a cloud that I was really struck by. Not only is this cloud so starkly on its own in the sky, but because it’s mottled with light and shadow, it stands off even more. That complexity floats on a really beautiful, pure gradient. I wanted to take that gradient and use it to describe the whole cloud. So, this is a representation of the cloud using blocks of pure linear gradients. A but of trying to describe the infinite finitely.

I grew up in the pre-Internet era and photo images of exotic places were found in National Geographic. (my family had a subscription)

It turns out my in-laws also loved National Geographic and saved many of them in their basement. (see attached photo)

Guess who inherited them?

As a visual person, I LOVE looking at photographs and began scanning through these paper adventures for interesting images with the goal of creating a collage. Combining the colors, shapes, and sizes are kind of like a puzzle. I thoroughly enjoyed the process and plan on making more with additional layers of color and or other materials.

To me "ART" is everywhere -

This from the collection of two-dimensional works from The Physible Universe series. This body of work is driven by computer algorithms and chance. It is a search for form and hidden structure made manifest in artworks. The work is the product of a process, made by a centaur, a man-machine combination each which informs the other during the production of the work. The Physible Universe dives deep into the underlying technical and metaphysical structures that create the meaning and style of this artistic approach.

The photographs are taken with a specially converted camera that records infrared “light” and blocks the visible spectrum. In this range, materials reflect differently than they do visible light. Since foliage tends to be highly reflective, landscapes often appear snowy. I’ve been a landscape photographer for years but being able to shoot in IR gives the ability to see the world in a new light.

'Water' is a series designed to display how something simple as water can be so versatile. Water is such a simple thing yet it can be both beautiful and destructive and both calm and rough. I wanted to use a single, simple tool to create the energy water takes on in its many stages. All that was used to create this series was a black paint pen. One single color and one single tool can create something so beautiful, simple, and chaotic. Living on Long Island, I used my personal experiences of seeing water at it's calmest like the beach, and during its most destructive like Hurricane Sandy to create Shore Break, Surge, and Swell. These pieces can be interpreted as abstract and organic like water.

I am an Industrial Designer studying to get my Master in Science in Sports Product Design at the University of Oregon and painting gives me the opportunity to be creative and inspire more of my design work which can be seen at https://emilyguerradesign.com/.

This work is observing and documenting the changes that occur in all things, in this case, flowers that are dying with changes that are easily noticeable.  The colors and shapes of the flowers evolve over time, water disappears into vapor, youthfulness becomes old, and nothing can stop this process.  Other materials including our bodies are the same as these flowers, reminding us that everything is impermanent.

The title for this work is: “GRADIENT SKY”

I made this work on April during lockdown, our emotional state was very low at that time due to the news on covid, the feeling of fear and uncertainty was truly overwhelming.

The light room is located at my home studio in Brooklyn, during the month of May every night was on from 8pm-11pm. The room became a “healing room” at night, not only for my family and I, but also for the people who saw it from the street, a window of fantasy a sunset chamber, a saturated hue.

My moonlighting passion is photography.  Unfortunately, finding the time to use my SLR camera, processing the film, and then develop prints has been a challenge.

For the past few years my iPhone has become my sole camera to capture light and record memories.  These digital moments now live hidden in the cloud. But, to extend their second of time, I periodically use my images as my iPhone’s lock screen background; to create a personnel pocket gallery, and a momentary visual reminder one finger touch away.
